How to restore with an IPSW
Finder on a Mac or iTunes on Windows installs the file for you in a few steps.
- 1Download the correct IPSW for your exact model.
- 2Connect your device to your computer.
- 3Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows).
- 4Hold Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) and click Restore.
- 5Select the downloaded IPSW file and confirm.
Restoring wipes all data. Back up your device first.
Only firmware Apple is still signing will install. Look for the green Signed label on a device's page.

What is an IPSW file?
An IPSW file is Apple's firmware package for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and other devices. It contains the complete operating system and is used to restore, update, or downgrade a device through Finder, iTunes, or tools like idevicerestore.
What is a signed IPSW?
A signed IPSW is a version Apple currently approves for installation, and the only kind a device accepts in a normal restore. Once Apple stops signing a version, it can no longer be installed without saved SHSH blobs or specific exploits.
Which IPSW do I need?
The one for your exact model. On an iPhone or iPad its name is in Settings › General › About, and on a Mac in Apple menu › About This Mac. Models that look alike can need different files, so match the name exactly.
Can I downgrade my iPhone with an IPSW?
Only to versions Apple is still signing, which is usually just the latest release and occasionally the previous one. Check the signing status on the device page before attempting a downgrade.
Are these downloads safe?
Yes. Every download link points directly to Apple's own servers (such as updates.cdn-apple.com and secure-appldnld.apple.com), so Zeus never hosts or changes a file. A device also checks the firmware with Apple before it installs.
